Water heater maintenance

Hot water cylinder maintenance in Brest: planning checks before a breakdown

Is your electric water heater still working well? This is a useful time to organise its care, before a breakdown interrupts your hot water.

Maintenance depends on the model, water conditions and service history. Prepare a visit and keep useful records without dismantling the appliance.

1. Find the manual and service history

Record the make, model, capacity and installation date if known. Gather the manual, installation invoice and previous service reports. The last descaling date is useful when taking over a home.

Different designs have different requirements. A conventional electric cylinder, electronic corrosion protection and a heat pump water heater do not share every check. Heat pump models also need the instructions for their heat pump section followed.

2. Establish a simple observation routine

Look periodically at the outside and the surrounding floor without removing covers. Note water marks, changes in reheating time or reduced comfort under similar usage. Dated photos help track a change.

Keep the cylinder and drain accessible. Follow the manual for operating the safety valve and ask for a demonstration if needed. Never block its outlet or force a stuck control.

If there is already a leak or loss of hot water, consult the fault guide. A routine maintenance visit does not replace diagnosis of a current fault.

3. Agree the professional checks

Ask what servicing includes for your model: a general inspection, corrosion protection checks and descaling where the condition calls for it. Required seals and parts depend on the work.

Identify the protection fitted: a magnesium anode wears away, whereas electronic protection has its own operating requirements. The professional uses the manual to check the actual system; replacement parts are not identical across all cylinders.

Do not drain or open the tank to prepare for the visit. Those operations involve electricity, hot water and recommissioning. Leave them to a professional and agree access arrangements instead.

4. Set a schedule and retain records

Ask for a schedule suited to the appliance and its condition. Atlantic recommends descaling its electric water heaters every two years; this does not override your model’s instructions or an on-site assessment.

  • Keep the visit date and appliance reference.
  • Record completed work and replaced parts.
  • Retain observations and recommendations.
  • Note the next review date and anything to monitor.

If replacement is being considered, use our capacity and installation planning guide to match the choice to the home.

Maintenance questions

Do all tanks need descaling at the same interval?

No. The manual, water conditions, usage and history help determine a suitable schedule.

Should I drain the cylinder before the appointment?

Do not do so on your own initiative. Agree any preparation with the professional without dismantling the appliance.
