Replacing a water heater or fitting out a home in Brest? Simply choosing the same tank size as before can overlook changes in your household and the equipment available.
A suitable choice balances hot water demand, reheating and installation constraints. Use this checklist to prepare your project with Alo Plombier.
1. Start with daily routines
Two households with the same number of occupants can use hot water very differently. Short showers spread through the day place a different demand on the tank from several showers in a row followed by an evening bath.
- How many people live here, including occasional guests?
- When do showers and baths follow one another?
- Which taps and bathrooms does this cylinder supply?
- Is the home occupied continuously or only at certain times?
Describe what needs to improve: a reserve that runs out, awkward access or an oversized appliance. That is more useful than deciding the capacity before discussing your needs.
2. Compare useful hot water as well as tank size
Tank capacity and V40, the available volume at 40°C after mixing with cold water, are different figures. Check the manufacturer’s V40 when comparing models.
Reheating time and power supply also matter. A model that replenishes its reserve during the day may have different requirements from a cylinder intended for a long heating period. Have compatibility with your controls and electricity tariff checked.
A small tank may run out at peak demand. A larger one needs more room, so extra capacity should meet a real need rather than be the default choice.
3. Check installation and maintenance access
Measure height, width and depth, plus doorways and the route to the installation point. Leave access for pipework and future servicing; the appliance’s outline alone does not describe the space needed.
For wall mounting, the wall and fixings must suit the weight of the filled cylinder. The installer checks the support and permitted mounting position. Do not assume a vertical model can be fitted horizontally.
4. Prepare a useful quotation request
Send an overall photo, a readable picture of the rating plate and a view of the connections. Include available dimensions and access difficulties. Keep personal information and documents out of the photographs.
Ask the quote to identify the proposed appliance and included work: removal, disposal, connection changes and commissioning as applicable. Cost and timing depend on the assessment; photographs cannot establish every installation constraint.

Manufacturer guidance
Thermor: tank capacity and V40 (French). Check the selected model’s documentation for its installation and operating requirements.
Before choosing a cylinder
Should I keep the old tank capacity?
Not automatically. Review current demand, V40, reheating and available space.
Can a model be confirmed from photos alone?
Photos help prepare the project. The support, access and connections may need an on-site check.
